CERTIFICATION PROCEDURE FOR WAITING WEEK CREDIT OR A BENEFIT, IF DUE ONE

REMEMBER: YOU MUST CERTIFY FOR ANY UNEMPLOYMENT WEEK FOR WHICH YOU WISH TO RECEIVE WAITING WEEK CREDIT OR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS THE SECOND WEEK FOLLOWING THE WEEK IN WHICH YOU OPEN OR RE-OPEN YOUR CLAIM. YOU MUST DO THIS BY PHONING IN TO THE TELE-SERVE SYSTEM ON YOUR ASSIGNED DAY, IN NO INSTANCE LATER THAN THE FRIDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK FOLLOWING YOUR ASSIGNED DAY.  ANY ATTEMPT TO CERTIFY AFTER THESE TIME LIMITATIONS, YOU WILL BE DEEMED UNTIMELY WITH YOUR CERTIFICATION AND DENIED. The option number for certification is “1”. If the last digit of your Social Security number is 0, or 1, your first assigned day will be Monday March 24; if the last digit of your Social Security number is 3, 5, 7, or 9 your first assigned day will be Tuesday March 25; if the last digit of your Social Security number is 2, 4, 6, or 8 your first assigned day will be Wednesday March 26. The very last day that anyone can certify timely is Friday April 4. Anyone not certified by this date will be denied credit for the week. The Tele-Serve number is 1-888-337-7234. It is available Monday through Friday, 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., including holidays. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are assigned days and Thursday and Friday are free days to certify.

NOTE: Be sure to use a landline based telephone to certify. Cell phones and cordless phones do not record in many instances and there is no way to prove you made the attempt to certify. If it does not record you will lose credit for the week.

1)      The first question asked is “Did you or will you receive holiday pay during this certification period?” Your response should be to hit “3” for “no”.

It will then state, “You indicated you did not receive nor will you receive holiday pay. If this is

true, press 1”. You should press 1.

2)       It will ask, “Did you work during this certification period?” You will press “3” for “no”. It will then state, “You indicated that you did not work during this certification period and did not have earnings. If this is true press “1”. You will press “1”.

3)      It may ask, “Did you quit or get fired?” If it does, you will press “3” for “no”.

4)      It will ask, “Has your dependent status changed?” Unless there has been a change since your last filing, this will be answered by pressing “3” for “no”. Remember, only dependent children under age 18 may be claimed. If you have a last dependent child turning 18 during a certification period, call the unemployment office and report it.

5)      The next question will be, “Were you able and available for work each day during your normal workweek?” This should be answered by pressing “1” for “yes” unless you were not able or available for work on any days of the layoff period. It will then state “You indicated you were able and available for work each day. If this is true press 1.” You should press “1” for “yes”. NOTE: Those retiring effective March 31 will have to answer this question by pressing “3” for “no”. It will then state that you indicated you were not available each day of this certification period. You will press “1” for “yes”. It will then ask how many days you were unavailable from March 23 to March 29. You will press “0”. It will then ask how many days you were unavailable for the week of March 30 to April 5. You will press “4”.

6)      It may ask at this point, “Did you actively look for work?” No matter where in the process this question is asked, if it is, always answer by pressing “1” for “yes”.

7)      It will now ask, “Are you receiving or have you applied for a Social Security pension?” You will answer this as it applies to you. For the majority the answer is to press “3” for “no”. However, we now have members who do have to answer this one by pressing “1” for “yes”.

8)      It next will ask, “Other than Social Security, are you receiving or have you applied for retirement or disability pension?” For the vast majority, this response should be to press “3” for “no”.

9)      It will ask, “Are you attending school or receiving training?” Again, for the majority this answer will be to press “3” for “no”.

10)  It will ask, “Have you applied for or are you receiving workers compensation?” Unless this applies to you, press “3” for “no”.

11)  Next you will be asked, “Has your telephone number changed?” Unless it has, this should be answered by pressing “3” for “no”.

12)  You will now be asked, “Has your mailing address or name changed?” If it has, be sure to call the Unemployment Office to make the change before you certify. Unemployment checks will not be forwarded by the Post Office. If there is no change press “3” for “no”.

13)  “Do you certify that the information you gave for this claim period is true?” You will press “1” for “yes”, unless you feel you made a mistake while certifying.

14)  It will then tell you “you have certified that the information you gave is true. If this is correct, press “1”. You will press ‘1”.

15)  It will then proceed with further information and tell you if your certification has been accepted for the certification period. It will end by telling you that your certification has been completed.

REMEMBER: Members of the big plant (unit 1) that there is full SUB pay eligibility for those seniority employees who opened a new benefit year as of this filing. You will need to take the findings sheet (the one with quarterly earnings, the amount of the weekly benefit and that states “new” under the type of claim) to personnel to get signed up.

Also, if for some reason you do not receive an unemployment check because you failed to either apply or certify during a previous layoff, you are eligible to apply for the amount of SUB pay you would ordinarily receive had you received an unemployment benefit. You will need your findings sheet and will need to report to personnel to make application.
