Building the Power of our Union through Standing Committees Article 44 of the UAW Constitution requires the Local Union to establish these Local Union Committees. These committees have defined functions to perform for the Local Union Membership. The Local Union shall have the following Standing Committees: · Citizenship and Legislative (CAP) · Civil Rights · Community Services · Conservation and Recreation · Constitution and Bylaws · Education · Union Label · Veteran’s · Women’s
**The Local Union may also create other such committees as they deem necessary.
Standing Committees should not exist simply because “it says so in the Constitution”. They were designed and exist because they can be building blocks upon which a successful Local Union is based. Standing Committees also provide the starting point for many long-term Union activists. Your contribution and belief in the labor movement is fundamental to everything a standing committee does. These committees support UAW members by implementing activities that further the social, economic and political goals of the UAW. Local Union Standing Committees are made up of individuals who may have a special interest or strength in a particular area to they may just want to learn more about a specific subject and find a way to contribute to the labor movement. Local Union Standing Committees are the tools through which the policies and programs aimed at strengthening our Union are put to work. An effective Standing Committee uses the diversity of its Local Membership to bring together ideas, opinions and information needed to support common labor objectives that include: · Building Solidarity among the membership · Encouraging members to take part in activities involving the Local Union · Becoming politically active · Providing communication links within the workplace · Working with our coalition partners in building a progressive social movement · Educating members to become active in the Local Union
Basics of a Standing Committee Standing Committees have officers as well as members. Most standing committees exist of: · Chairperson · Vice/Co-Chair · Secretary · Members · Sometimes sub-committees or task force (Example: Our Education Committee has the sub-committee of the Local Union Paper) The Local Union President, as provided in the UAW Constitution, serves as a member ex-officio on all standing committees in the Local Union. Standing Committees hold regular meetings as determined by their Local Union By-Laws, or as determined by the Committee in consultation with Leadership.
What Standing Committees Do? An effective standing committee is a motivated and energetic group of members who can apply their abilities to the specific area of interest. Standing Committees work with their Local Union Executive Board. They identify topics, programs and issues that are important to the membership, the community, the International Union and the labor movement as a whole. Standing Committees report at membership meetings in regards to their progress and future plans/activities.
How Do I Get Involved? Local Union By-Laws state that members are appointed by their Local Union President and/or Chair of said Committee. It is important that appointees have initiative, energy, dedication and a willingness to learn and work in conjunction with other members. Members who choose to participate on a standing committee make significant contributions toward building strong Local Unions and a more equitable society by educating, motivating and mobilizing the membership around issues that affect all working families. Those interested in joining a Standing Committee should submit an application at the Local Union Hall (1100 W. Chrysler Dr. Belvidere, IL). You can contact the hall at (815)544-2111.
What Makes a Standing Committee Successful? Communication- not only among their respective committee but with Leadership, the membership and other committees. Many projects overlap between committees; talking to and offering support to those committees will ensure success for the entire membership. Make sure to report on anything concerning your committee at the monthly membership meetings. Accepting Challenges- ask for help if needed. Be prepared to look for solutions and alternatives when faced with a problem. Don’t reject ideas because they seem complicated or because “it’s never been done before”. Listen-to the membership and what they are asking for. This may include classes, education in politics or activities that will bring everyone together for a common interest. Persistence- builds on small successes and activities that give your committee a sense of pride. Encourage each other and remember that working together collectively can accomplish more than working alone. At times you will find there is limited interest from the membership, make them aware you are coordinating these activities for the betterment of the Local and remind them that participation is key to that success.
